What can the Jobcentre help you with?

What is Jobseeker’s Allowance?

Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) is a benefit provided to the unemployed who are actively seeking work. In order to make a claim, you must be aged 18+ but be below the state pension age. At the time of writing, this is 65 for men and women. 

In addition to being available to take up work, you must not be in full-time education when you file for Jobseeker’s Allowance. 

The government offer two types of Jobseeker’s Allowance:

  • Contribution-based: If you’ve made a satisfactory number of National Insurance contributions within the two years prior to lodging your claim, you can claim contribution-based JSA. You can claim for up a maximum of 182 days (26 weeks). If you still don’t have a job after this time period elapses, you may be entitled to receive an alternative benefit. For example, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance.
  • Income-based: If you have not made enough National Insurance contributions, then you will be assessed based on your income. This means you need to work 16 hours or less per week (on average). Additionally, your spouse must work no more than 24 hours each week. Finally, if you have more than £16,000 in savings, you cannot claim income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance. 

The amount of Jobseeker’s Allowance you earn is based on your age, savings, and current income. As a guideline, you can expect:

  • Up to age 24: up to £58.98 per week
  • 25+: up to £74.35 per week
  • Couples both aged 18+: up to £116.80 per week

Once you are approved for Jobseeker’s Allowance, you must visit your local Jobcentre Plus every fortnight to ‘sign on.’ If you stop attending these sessions or turn down an interview, your claim may be denied.

What is Income Support?

As an alternative to Jobseeker’s Allowance, Jobcentre Plus offer Income Support. This is available to UK residents who have either low income or no income at all. 

  • You must be aged between 16 and 65 (state pension age)
  • You must work no more than 16 hours per week
  • Your spouse must work 24 hours per week or less
  • Finally, you must present a valid reason why you cannot seek further (or any) work

Income Support is usually granted to the following individuals:

  • Expectant mothers
  • A carer
  • A single parent with a child under 5 years

Any personal savings that you have must not exceed £16,000. Again, your partner’s income and savings will be taken into account. Besides, that if you and your partner are both claiming benefits, only one of you will be granted Income Support. Unlike Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support is means-tested. That means that any savings over £6,000 impact how much Income Support you can receive. 

Those who are in full-time secondary education may be eligible for Income Support if they are not living with a parent or carer. You can contact Jobcentre Plus to find out if you are entitled. 

At present, the weekly personal allowance for individuals are: 

  • £57.90 for those aged 16-24
  • £73.10 for those aged 25+  

Couples over the age of 18 can receive a maximum of £114.85 per week.

What is Universal Credit?

Universal Credit is currently being rolled out across the country in place of Income Support. In the long run, it will eventually replace Income Support and various other Jobcentre benefits entirely.
